E.E. Evans-Pritchard
Biography
By: Maranda
Durham-Melton
E. E. Evans-Pritchard was born in 1902, in the town of Sussex,
England. He went to school at the University of Oxford. Evans-Pritchard began
studying Modern History at the University. Evans-Pritchard then went on to do
some post-graduate studies at the London School of Economics and Political
Science. He then decided to major in Anthropology after attending school for a
while. He is the one man that believed in the interpretation of culture. E.E.
Evans-Pritchard researched the Azande and Nuer tribes of southern Sudan. He in
fact lived with the Azande for 20 months and studied their culture quite
productively. While doing this work with each of these tribes it was considered
his fieldwork in school. The Azande in which he lived pretty much adopted him
into their tribe as well as the Nuer yet he learned a great deal from the Azande
and when he moved back home he missed them greatly. Both of the tribes dealt
with witchcraft, Oracles of Magic among the people and since Evans-Pritchard
accepted the ideas he was not harmed in any way. He did write a book about the
Azande and Nuer dealing with the theoretical writings and lectures that he was
taught throughout the culture. He was known for his great teaching skills but
the publishing of his later works in books and his lectures is what helped him
become very well known. E.E. Evans-Pritchard did work for the Oxford School of
Social Anthropology and students from around the world came just for the
experience as well as the education. He also enjoyed Sociology and believed
that it was a pure observation. When he lived with the Azande he observed their
practices of witchcraft and magic. He quotes “that this is a departure from our
own beliefs (Theory).” The Azande believed that the Oracles of Witchcraft had
three main points: a person had to rub an oracle, poison an oracle, and a
witchdoctor oracle. The Azande witchcraft is a very important daily routine for
this tribe. Evans-Pritchard understood how to adapt to a culture and respect
what was being observed. He did however; miss the Azande after he had left
southern Sudan. He did study for a while in Cairo, Egypt and loved living among
the Arabs.
