Edward Tylor Biography
By: Maranda
Durham-Melton
Edward
Burnett Tylor was born on October 2, 1832 in London, England. Edward’s parents
were Joseph Tylor and Harriet Skipper, he had a brother named Alfred and they
were born in the life of being a Quaker, technology, and lots of money in the
family. Tylor was a prominent Anthropologist and he strongly believed in
cultural evolution. Tylor attended the school Tottenham with his Brother
Alfred’s guidance. He had tuberculosis; so it made Tylor have a prompt travel
life, which finally led him to Mexico. He is considered the “Father of
Anthropology.” Tylor had many accomplishments throughout his life. He was
intrigued by science and culture and the ways in which he believed they were
related. He has had extensive research in science and he somehow related his
findings to Anthropology. He was head of the University Museum at Oxford and
was a Professor of Anthropology in the years of 1896 until 1909. He was the one
person that led a pathway so that graduate students were able to have a degree
in Anthropology from Oxford University. He states clearly on the subject of
animism “the idea that all living things were produced by a spiritual force and
have souls, also that demons and spirits exist (Internet).” Mentality it seems
to Tylor was a very important aspect of what directs people’s actions. Another
accomplishment that Tylor had under his belt was of the Primitive Religions.
His first book was Anthropology believing it was connected to culture and
theories. He had other books that were published during his career which
include: Researches into the Early History of Mankind published in 1865,
Primitive Culture published in 1871, and Anahuac published
in 1861. Edward Tylor helped lay the foundation for other university programs
to start their own Anthropology departments. In 1883, Tylor formed the
Anthropological Section of the British Association. His thoughts on culture and
how it includes the knowledge, beliefs, arts, customs, morals, laws, and
anything else that we might be able to conclude in what makes up this society.
