History of Chickamauga Battlefield Hauntings

Many years before the Civil War, the Cherokee Indians had named the stream “Chickamauga” or the “River of Death” due to all of the dying among the Native Americans that took place on the land that would later be know as Chickamauga Battlefield.

In 1863, Union and Confederate soldiers fought for control of Chattanooga, which was considered to be the gateway to the Deep South. The Chickamauga National Park was created in 1890 to commemorate the battlefield of Chickamauga.

The 5,500-acre Chickamauga Battlefield was the scene of the last major Confederate victory of the Civil War and one of the bloodiest wars in history. The number of casualties was a towering number of over 35,000. The soldiers’ bodies lie in unmarked graves all over the battlefield.

Thirty years after the battle a camp was established on the old battlefield to train men for the Spanish-American war. During the time of the camp many men died from disease. This is just many of deaths that have occurred at Chickamauga Battlefield. And the long record of death did not end there either. The park has been the scene of death by murder and suicide. It has been reported that at least one death each year occurs in the park. It is also a well-known fact that Satanic Rituals and Covenant meetings are held in the park. This only adds to the phenomena that the park is believed to hold.

 G.H.O.S.T. Highlights

Chickamauga Battlefield is said by many to be haunted by many ghosts and spirits. Stories of lights being seen on the battlefield is believed to be the lanterns of the women who came searching the field after the battle of Chickamauga had ended. The witnesses of sightings and hearing of unidentified noises range from visitors to Rangers that work at the park. Some noises heard are women crying, horses galloping, gunshots heard, and screaming by an unknown presence. It is also said that you can see a soldier walking along the road.

The lady in white is a well-known legend of Chickamauga Battlefield. Many have witnessed a lady dressed in all white wandering the field. Legend says that she is a wife, fiancé or girlfriend of a soldier that had died in battle and she is still searching for him. The most famous ghost legend is “Old Green Eyes”. Witnesses say that a pair of eyes that are bright green will follow you whether you are on foot or by car. There are two stories of “Old Green Eyes”. One legend states that the eyes are of a soldier that had his head blown off. The other legend is that the eyes are not of a human at all but an entity that inhabited Chickamauga Battlefield before there was ever even a battle. It is said that the Entity was to be seen roaming the field among the dead soldiers’ bodies after the Battle of Chickamauga was over.

A park Ranger claims to have had an encounter with “Old Green Eyes” in 1981. He described the entity as having green eyes like a wild animal, long hair, sharp fangs and walked on two legs.

Chickamauga Battlefield has been a place of death since before the famous battle of 1863. There have been many lives lost in the park and some people have died and their bodies dumped in the park. Some even ask, how could it not be haunted? You will enjoy your visit to the park. It is beautiful and there is a lot to be learned. But beware; your visit may leave you with more than what you were seeking, especially after the sun goes down.
